PAT testing for housekeeping and hotels

If you operate housekeeping services or operate cleaning equipment in a hotel, how can you keep your electrical equipment safe and compliant?

This short guide will explain how PAT testing can help.

Do I have to get PAT testing carried out on my cleaning equipment?

UK legislation states that housekeeping services, hotels and other businesses need to ensure electrical equipment is maintained in a safe condition. PAT testing is the most effective way to do this.

Cleaning equipment is more prone to damage as it is used regularly and is often handled roughly. This increases the risk of it failing, as well as of electric shock and fire.

Cables can also get easily damaged as equipment travels over them. For example, cables can get chewed up and damaged by vacuum cleaners.

What equipment do I need to get PAT tested?

As a rule of thumb, anything that needs to be plugged into the mains needs to be PAT tested. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Vacuum cleaners/hoovers
  • Polishing machines and buffers
  • Steam cleaners and mops
  • Pressure washers
  • Carpet cleaning machines
  • Irons
  • Box sweepers

Although cordless equipment doesn’t technically need testing, their battery chargers would as these plug into the mains.

If you use extension reels or leads to help reach hard-to-access areas, you need to get these tested too.

What needs PAT testing?

Do I need to PAT test any cleaning equipment I have hired?

Yes – if you have it on hire for over a week you will need to include it in your PAT testing schedule.

Do I have to get PAT testing done if I am bringing equipment into a customer’s premises?

Yes. If you are responsible for the equipment you could be liable if someone gets hurt or you cause damage.

Your customer might ask to see an insurance certificate or proof of PAT testing.
