New emergency lighting guidance for facilities managers launched

In January 2021, The Society of Light and Lighting published a guidance document. This document addresses lighting in regards to facilities managers and facilities management companies.

Why is emergency lighting so important for facilities managers?

If your building experiences a power cut, the emergency lighting will illuminate to safely and calmly guide people out of the building.

If it doesn’t work properly it can cause confusion, panic and result in more time needed to exit the building. In an emergency situation like a fire, every second is valuable.

As emergency lighting needs to operate when the power is off, it is powered by rechargeable batteries.

Emergency lighting is required by law in all publically accessible buildings, and must be regularly tested to ensure that it is functional.

Facilities managers are responsible for installing, maintaining and testing this lighting.

What does the guidance cover?

The guidance covers two key areas.

  1. Optimising lighting systems. Many buildings, especially older ones, have inefficient and unoptimised lighting systems. The guidance looks at how lighting can be optimised for 2021 and beyond, providing case studies detailing how some facilities managers have elected to do this
  2. Moving towards more energy-efficient lighting options. The UK has pledged to be carbon neutral by 2050, and energy-saving lighting can play a major part in achieving this target. There are a wide range of energy-efficient emergency lighting options available, including the use of LED lights
