Electric car charging point grants available and the criteria - EVHS and WCS

If you are looking to purchase an electric car, or provide charging at your place of business, there are grants available to help offset the cost.

Did you know that you can claim up to £350 towards the cost of each charging point you install?

Here is information about what is available, and the eligibility criteria.

EV charge points at home

The Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) provides up to two vouchers for grant funding of up to 75% or £350 towards installing domestic electric vehicle charging points.

The two vouchers are for two electric vehicles - you can only claim one voucher per eligible vehicle.

The EVHS will run until 31 March 2022.

EVHS grant criteria

  • You must own, rent or lease the property in question. For rented or leased properties, you will need permission from the person or company that owns the property
  • You must have dedicated off-street parking. If you only have on street-parking, speak to your local authority as there are grants they can claim for this
  • You must have purchased or be leasing a qualifying electric vehicle. If you are leasing the vehicle the lease must be for at least six months, but you can apply when you first get the vehicle. You will need to submit a copy of the lease agreement with your application
  • The installation must be completed by an OZEV approved supplier
  • The charging point must be equipped with ‘smart technology’, meaning that it can be remotely accessed and managed

You can only claim the vouchers once. So if you have two charge points installed at one property and move home, you will not be able to claim again.

Vouchers are valid for six months (180 days) and the installation needs to be completed in this timeframe.

If you are a resident of Scotland, you may also be eligible for cashback between £300 and £400 for your domestic EV installation. This grant is provided by Energy Savings Trust Scotland.

EV charge points at work

The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) provides vouchers that businesses, charities and public sector organisations can use to subsidise the costs of electric vehicle charging points. These vouchers provide funding of up to 75% or £350 per charging point.

Companies can apply for up to forty vouchers. This means that you can apply for the grant multiple times as long as you meet eligibility requirements.

WCS grant criteria

  • You must be a registered business, charity or public sector organisation, with a Companies House reference number, VAT registration number or HMRC registration letter
  • You must be able to declare a need for EV charging equipment or an intent to encourage the use of electric vehicles
  • You must have dedicated off-street parking for staff and fleets
  • You must own the property or have consent from your landlord to install the charging points
  • The charging point must be equipped with ‘smart technology’, meaning that it can be remotely accessed and managed
  • You can only claim for units/sites listed on the voucher to receive the grant
  • The installation must be completed by an OZEV (formerly OLEV) approved supplier

Vouchers are valid for six months (180 days) and the installation needs to be completed in this timeframe.
